Professor Benjamin Dekel Discusses Innovative Kidney Regeneration Strategies at IRBM, CIMR
7 May , 2025

On May 7th, the Institute for Regenerative Biology and Medicine(IRBM), Chinese Institutes for Medical Research (CIMR) proudly hosted Professor Benjamin Dekel, an internationally renowned leader in regenerative medicine and nephrology, for a special scientific lecture.

Professor Dekel holds the Klayman Professorship of Nephro-Urology, serves as Chief of Pediatric Nephrology and Director of the Pediatric Stem Cell Research Institute at Sheba Medical Center, and is the Vice Dean for Research and Innovation as well as Director of the Sagol Center for Regenerative Medicine at Tel Aviv University.

In his talk titled "Urine is Gold," Professor Dekel addressed the global challenge of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and presented pioneering regenerative approaches aimed at combating this epidemic. He shared insights from his team's work on the transplantation of embryonic kidney precursor tissues and the isolation of kidney tissue stem/progenitor cells for therapeutic use.

Highlighting his latest research, Professor Dekel discussed the generation of kidney spheroids and organoids from tissue progenitors, with a special focus on utilizing human urine as a non-invasive and abundant source of stem cells. His innovative solutions carry transformative potential for disease modeling, kidney repair, and the future of renal medicine.

The lecture was met with great enthusiasm and sparked meaningful discussions among CIMR faculty and trainees. We extend our sincere gratitude to Professor Dekel for sharing his groundbreaking research and vision for advancing regenerative therapies.
